RTW runners monthly roundup – August 2020


As we entered the month of August, we saw record breaking temperatures, with 36 degrees celcius reported in parts of the South-East. However, this heatwave soon made way for cooler temperatures and the arrival of Storm Francis as we made our way through the month.

With regards to our running group, we continued to provide outdoor sessions in Southborough on Monday evenings and in Forest Row on Wednesday evenings and our virtual running groups keep on going.

In this month’s round-up we take a look at the results from our most recent virtual running challenge, the outdoor running groups which will be commencing from September, our virtual running groups, the next RTW runners virtual running challenge (a 10km handicap run) and finally, some online and outdoor exercise classes to supplement your running.

RTW runners virtual marathon team relay – the results

Over the August bank holiday weekend, 11 of our runners each went out to complete a solo run over a distance which they had volunteered to complete in advance. Runners had been teamed up into 3 separate teams, based upon their nominated distance and estimated finishing time, with each team covering the 26.2 mile distance. The estimated team times would see just 7 minutes separating the teams and so now we can reveal the results!

The end result was pretty close, with less than 21 minutes separating all three teams! Well done to team 2 for completing the marathon in a very swift 3:36.27. In 2nd postition were team 3, which consisted of just 3 runners, with a time of 3:49.07. On the final podium spot were team 1, who also managed a sub 4-hour marathon in a time of 3:57.03.

One of the great things to mention of these virtual challenges is that there is no restriction on geographical location as we are able to welcome people from our Southborough, Forest Row and virtual running groups. In addition to this, you don’t need to travel to the “event” and can make use of local footpaths or trails and complete the run at a time of day which suits you.

Outdoor running groups from September

With the evenings beginning to draw in now, we shall be bringing an end to our evening running groups in Southborough and Forest Row, with the final session in Southborough taking place on Monday 7th September and in Forest Row on Wednesday 9th September, both 18:30-19:30. However, from that week, we shall commence morning running groups in both locations as follows:

Forest Row (10th September start):
Thursdays – 08:15-09:00 – “Zero to 30” beginners running group

Southborough (13th September start) :
Sundays 09:00-09:55 – continuous (socially distanced) group run
Sundays 10:00-10:55 – running intervals & drills

Each session costs £5 per person, with group sizes limited to 8 people to ensure that social distancing measures can be adhered to. Booking is now available for the first three sessions. To guarantee your place on any of these sessions please visit our RunTogether groups page.

Rest assured that all of our outdoor sessions take place on enclosed playing fields, which allow us to provide a Covid-19 secure environment for the safety of our runners & coach as well as other users of the playing fields.

Virtual running groups

Another option which has been on offer since 25th May is our virtual running groups. Our 8-week beginners, “Zero to 30” group completed on 19th July with most of the group joining our intermediate, “beginners plus” group on the 20th July. They are now 7 weeks into their programme and we look forward to continuing this group as well as our advanced, “all abilities” group (which has been running for a total of 15 weeks) into the Autumn and Winter months. Our next 8-week virtual beginners running group will commence on Monday 14th September 2020.

As with the virtual challenges, these remote running groups provide people with the flexibility of completing their main session on a day and at a time of their choice. These groups also provide accountability, motivation, structure and gradual improvement, which is important for any exercise routine.

Each week costs £5 per person and for this you receive a weekly session plan which includes one main structured interval session with coaching points to focus on. In addition, there is the choice to join in a weekly group chat at the end of the week which provides an opportunity to catch up with fellow group members and to ask any questions to group leader Joe Watts. RTW runners virtual running challenge #4

Test yourself in the next running challenge in our series!

We are pleased to announce our next FREE virtual running challenge which will take place over the weekend of Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September. We invite you to complete a 10km run on a course of your choice, at any time over that weekend in the fastest time that you can.

In order to make the challenge more interesting, we will be using a handicap system to determine your predicted finishing time based on your recent performance or estimated time for a 10km run. The predicted finish times will then be published in advance providing each runner with a time to beat!

Online & outdoor exercise classes with PlegaFit

In addition to and to supplement your running, group leader and Personal Trainer Joe Watts is offering online and outdoor group exercise classes from September 2020.

Online classes:
Mondays 18:30-19:00 – Plyometrics (jumps and bounds)
Thursdays 18:30-19:00 – Leg strengthening
Fridays 07:15-07:45 – Core & lower back
strengthening

Each class is delivered live via Zoom and consists of a warm-up, 3 sets of 6 bodyweight exercises and a cool down and stretches. No equipment is required, although an exercise mat is recommended for your comfort. The 30 minute classes cost £2.50 per person or you can purchase a monthly pass with access to every session for just £9.99.

Outdoor group circuit training in Forest Row:
Tuesdays 08:15-09:00

Taking place at the Memorial Paviliion playing fields in Forest Row, these classes involve a combination of upper body and lower body bodyweight exerises designed to help strengthen your body and improve your running. No equipment is used or required and group sizes are limited to 8 people to ensure that social distancing can be adhered to. Classes cost £5 per person.
